#Architectural Mapping
BMEO, The Ambassy of Japan in Belgium and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commisionned Drop The Spoon to create an architectural mapping celebrating Japan for the 150 years of Japan / Belgium friendship.
The mapping was projected on the St. Catherine Church in Brussels during the “Plaisirs d’Hivers” christmas market 2016.
For this mapping, we were provided inspiration by the Ukyo-e exhibition at the Brussels Museum of Art & History.
Ukyo-e prints including the very famous waves from Hokusai were used in order to give tribute to the arts from Japan that influenced occidental art hugely.
The museum gave us access to large and high resultion scans from the prints in their collection, from which we were able to take elements to create our animated tableaux.
The last tableau of the mapping is a tribute to modern Japan, whose cultural influence is still driving a lot of artists today. It feature an apparition from Tetsuwan Atom, courtesy of the Osamu Tezuka Foundation, as a tribute to this world renowned manga artist.
